Гипоталамус участвует в регуляции множества функций организма и формировании моделей поведения, в том числе и пищевого. У пациентов с поражением гипоталамической области могут развиваться такие  расстройства пищевого поведения как булимия и анорексия.  Дисбаланс энергетического гомеостаза (как ожирение, так и кахексия) вследствие гипоталамической дисфункции  может быть симптомом различных объемных образований гипоталамической области, что требует проведения дифференциальной диагностики для определения подходов к лечению таких пациентов.
